Slummin Angels @ Pink Festival

Cambridge is quite a long way to go to see a band, but there are some other bands playing that I vaguely know. Aliceband I have seen twice in London; they also replied when I sent them a message asking what time they are on. As Slummin Angels are on at six, Aliceband playing on the same 'alternative' stage at 3.30 is good timing.

The decisive factor for me travelling to Cambridge is the abnormal summer weather. It is 27 and spending some time outside seems an excellent idea. It's actually rather hot in the tent. The festival is free, although they charge a reasonable £2 for parking. I mainly look at bands on the alternative stage, although I do pop over to the Pink Lounge to catch the girl from Geekgirl doing an accoustic set. Things are running increasingly late in the alternative tent (sorry, stage!) and Slummin Angels are on much nearer 7 than 6, but it's a nice evening and the lateness means the heat has eased and Slummin Angels do not drip with sweat like the afternoon bands did.

It's a very pleasant afternoon out and I would consider going again next year if the weather were fair.

Aliceband don't sell alicebands; this is surely a commercial opportunity missed. Tonight is an openmike night. Aliceband headline at around 10.30.If I had messaged them I could have arrived somewhat later and avoided drinking the pub dry of London Pride. I guess you will appreciate that I did't literally drink all the London Pride, there were other people drinking it too. I could also have avoided the earlier acts, some of whom just need a bit of practice, but what do you do when an act  is embarassingly bad? Is it helping them in anyway to applaude? Fortunately I'm sitting in the front of the pub writing a few notes about last night and need not walk out. I do not claim any great musical knowledge or even ear, but even I can spot that one of the acts needs to turn in another direction. As always there are a number of acts who are quite pleasant without being in anyway special. Maybe some will become special, but I rather doubt it. I think Aliceband are a bit special.
Alice's songs are good. Alice tells me she is thinking of getting a keyboard player for the band so she can just do lead vocals. I think this would provide scope to make their show more lively. When a lead singer also plays keys it is very difficult for a band not to be static in their live shows.
