Little Fish @ the Monarch, Camden

This place was called the Misty Moon and was a Weatherspoons pub until fairly recently. Confusingly the Barfly which is only a few yards down the road was called the Monarch before it became the Barfly. Tonight is the first event from promoters "Play it by Ear". The venue has lights and an open stage. There's a good turnout of Fish fans; the clues to this are that a lot of people leave after Little Fish finish and secondly I recognise many of those haven't gone. There are a lot of people I know to talk to from far-flung places - well Oxford and Portsmouth certainly. The promoters squeeze in a couple of unannounced numbers from Soko approximately when Little Fish should be taking the stage. She seems rather rushed and I don't think the crowd is hugely impressed. I think she did better last time I saw her.  After Little Fish have played 3 songs the promoters tell them that they can only play one more. It would be an understatement to say that there is a negative reaction. Both band and fans are insulted to be offered such a brief set. They segue two songs together as their one song. In fact the set seems to lasted 25 minutes according to my camera times. The promoters spend a lot of time apologising to the band, but this is rather pointless as it is difficult to imagine that Little Fish will play for them again. The Little Fish audience always contains a lot of 'industry' people, at least in the sense that I am an 'industry' person as I go lots of gigs and know quite a few bands. Like Little Fish I am quite sanguine about the farce. We all hang around in the street taking pictures for squid row. I catch the last tube for the second night running.

Strange Idols + Soko @ The Enterprise

Another Barfly B-sides night at the Enterprise. Disappointedly the Youngs is off, although the Guiness is not too expensive. Soko is from France and she attracts quite a few French people to the Barfly, and others like me); She is playing first and the place is pretty full at 8.30. I am a bit confused as to why she didn't headline. I prefer a more traditional approach where the crowd build up during the evening and us photographers can warm up gently (stand around drinking a beer). She sings sweet songs in English which are typically risque

Strange Idols are the headline band of the evening. By they play many of the French crowd have left and there is space to move - and take pictures.
