The Babies @ Madame Jojos

It's very rare that I go out to a show where I don't know any of the bands, even in those rare cases I have usually had a personal recommendation. White Heat at Madame Jojo's usually put on a good night and when I saw the Facebook event for tonight, at lunchtime, I thought 'why not, it will be a little adventure'.

So I saw Alphabet Backwards who, it was no surprise to learn, came from Oxford. They were pleasant enough and musical, but a bit too jolly for my taste. French Films are (confusingly) from Finland. They are an entertaining mix of The Ramones and The Horrors (circa Primary Colours); good tempo and engaging stage performance made for an enjoyable set. Nothing particularly Finnish about them (nor French). The headliners are The Babies who are a side project of several (almost) well known musicians from New York. Clear influences from Sonic Youthare exhibited and where well done (as here) this is no bad thing.

Bizarrely I was chatting to another photographer afterwards who recommended I checked out a band called Shuga. Shuga are a 2-piece band who include Emma from Thrush Metal, who I randomly saw on Sunday. This is a very strange coincidence as I had never heard of Thrush Metal before the weekend...I feel I should make an effort to see Shuga now.
