Lilies On Mars + The Dogbones @ The Purple Turtle
It's a big bill and the bands I've come to see are on at the beginning of the evening, so I arrive fairly early at ten to eight. There's no one taking money so I wander in and watch the Lilies soundcheck. Someone comes round and stamps everyone who already insides's hand. That's a good start to the evening. Lilies On Mars soon take to the stage. I didn't realise they had a drummer and tonight they don't. I wasn't listening properly when they said why but the keyboard player is ill in Italy. Lisa and Marina manage quite well on their own. Lisa has largely recovered from being laid low over new year. There are an astonishing number of people I know to talk to, and some more who seem familiar.
Dogbones are on next. They are not happy with the sound, but battle on. I'm more or less standing in front of a speaker so can't judge the sound. They look impressive and the beat from their two drummers fills the venue.
The third band , This is not a dead transmission feature Jaemie who used to be in Ophelia Torah. They also have sound problems, particularly with a disappearing bass, but put on a lively show, so I take a few snaps.
Lots of people to talk to afterwards.
The Dogbones @ the Bull & Gate
The Dogbones @ the Purple Turtle
Apparently the first Saturday of the month at the Purple Turtle is 'Stay Beaufiful' night. Dogbones are playing at 11. It didn't occur to me that there wouldn't be any sort of support at all. It seems rather a waste of a crowd and a venue. At least they have draught Guinness at the Purple Turtle and I meet Gary from Gillingham who is a Mab fan that run into from time to time, usually at Mab or Dogbones.
The Dogbones are worth waiting for, with their grungey sound and looks offering a gripping sound and spectacular vision.
Overall it's quite a relaxed evening with only one band and they finish in time for a leisurely trip home.
The Dogbones @ The Purple Turtle
First a debut for a band with no name, some of the members having been in Ophelia Torah. Emma assured me that they will have a name by Friday. They are kind of similar to Ophelia Torah but different. Same energy. [ Feb 25th - they announce new name as 'Jesus Got His Gun'
The Dogbones produce manic mayhem with their usual verve. A band with 2 drummers are always worth seeing.
The Dogbones @ the Metro
Strangely only announced on myspace at the last minute.
The Dogbones @ the Bullet Bar
The lighting is a little better than last week and the evening more organised. Although the mixture of bands is a bit bizarre.
