Little Fish @ Oxford Arts Festival
Little Fish @ The Drawing Room
And so the last gig of the day from Little Fish. There's a definite air of relaxation after the success of the Academy gig. Slight consternation when Juju's acoustic guitar is missing. It becomes apparent than none of us removed it from the Academy, and a quick phone call confirms its still there, safe and sound. This loss means we hear Cafe Solo on the electric guitar, possibly a unique experience.
Afterwards it smiles and hugs all round as Little Fish and Revese E exchange compliments and general niceness, which fits the general atmosphere at the drawing room. The Drawing Room overflows with niceness. I get home about 2am, proud to be able to call both Little Fish and Reverse E my friends.
Little Fish @ Oxford Academy
Little Fish have been invited to open Sarurday night at the new Oxford Carling Academy (formerly 'the zodiac').
"Ur on guest list come in" was the welcoming text I got as I arrived outside the Academy (luckily getting a parking space opposite). Unfortunately the doors were't open so I had to wait. Inside there's a faint smell of new paint. Backstage JuJu is excitedly nervous, Nez is quietly confident. Those of us not in the band take pictures of each other and the band, and eye the band's beer. The call to arms comes soon enough.
JuJu's nerves have evaporated with the first rattle of the snare drum in Devil's Eyes. The band are entirely at home in these surroundings. No strings break and the crowd respond enthusiatically. There must be over 200 people here for this early start, hardly any will have come for Little Fish so the positive reception is particularly encouraging. The show is over all too soon. Frantic dismantalling of kit and coiling of cables leaves no time for immediate reflection, but 20 minutes later with most of the kit packed, we relax outside the backdoor. It was a great evening. But the night is still young, there's time for another Little Fish show.
Little Fish @ The Drawing Room
Its a sunny day in Chesham and what better way to pass a Saturday lunchtime than watching JuJu performing an accoustic set whilst enjoying a light lunch; you may spot the poetic license employed here, obviously I was taking pictures and eating lunch (light or otherwise) is not recommended whilst taking pictures. But if you had been here I'm sure you would have enjoyed the delightful fayre offered at the Drawing Room. JuJu played accoustic versions of 3 little fish songs which were also played later in the day along with a few older songs. The crowd were enthusiastic (and polite) and there was some interest in CDs afterwards. I speculated whether the couple with matching laptops (using the Drawing Room's WiFi spot) were e-mailing each other rather than conversing (or maybe instant messaging). As the sun beat down it would have been easy to dawdle all afternoon but we had to move on.
Little Fish @ The Barfly
Its an early start at the Barfly with Little Fish on at 8.30. It can be a lonely task playing first at the Barfly; often a band will have travelled here to play in front of a couple of tourists and maybe a girlfriend - the cool people of Camden rarely venture out before 9 and the coolist will still be choosing their evening wear at 10. The word about Little Fish is spreading fast, and a fair number of people have braved the unfashionable hour to see another splendid performance from the duo. Whilst obviously I'm too cool to turn up often to see bands before 9, I may have occasionally been confused and arrived in time to see the first band- so you can believe me when I say that this is definitely an abnormally sizable and appreciative crowd. They will surely be invited back to play a later slot at the Barfly.
The nice thing about playing early is that there's plenty of time ater the band have played to relax and chat, and maybe have a drink. I ended up on the last tube.
Little Fish @ The Pleasure Unit
I have been out every night this week and by the end of the night have seen 11 bands in 4 nights. I have seen Little Fish 3 times in 7 days. I have to admit to being a little tired. If it had been a lesser band playing tonight I may just have gone to bed. Fortunately I dragged myself to the tube and on to the Pleasure Unit.
This is another charged performance. I think Perfect Stranger is even better than on Monday.
Little Fish @ The Camden Castle
The Dublin Castle still has little light, but they have Courage Best at a reasonable price. Since Friday's gig in Oxford Little Fish have moved up a gear. The show culminates in a magnificent new arrangement of the already magnificent 'Perfect Stranger'. You can see a ropey video of it on my Myspace videos; but you don't need to do that, you can come and see them live at the Barfly on Thursday 20th - they're on early so get down there for 8.
There is a little flurry of activity as several girls (of varying ages) spot Gary Barlow in the audience and are photographed with him. People who know who he is uniformly remark on how thin he is ! It seems that he is a man of taste as he has come to see Little Fish.
Little Fish @ The Wheatsheaf
Another rapid trip up the M40 to see the fishes in their natural habitat.
The Wheatsheaf is a reasonable size with some lights. Much of the crowd seem to have come to see Little Fish, although there also seems to be quite a few regulars for this monthly promotion by Club Kakofanney. First up are 'And All these Arms' who are from Brighton and worth checking out.
You may notice that the lighting is rather odd; there seems to be a growing trend to project images on top of the band. Whilst this is occasionally interesting it is at best a distraction when bands can perform.
There is a feeling that Little Fish have not yet got quite back to speed after their holiday, but they are still mighty impressive. They have been experimenting with the set order and opinion is divided on its success. By any normal standards the gig is a great success, by Little Fish standards there is space for improvement . Luckily we only have a couple of days before they play again.
Little Fish @ Camden Barfly
Little Fish are playing around 4 in this afternoon bill at the Barfly. Although I see a lot of bands in Camden, I rarely visit during the day and it really is amazing how the crowds of little people seem to fill every little part of the market and the roadway. Camden council apparently have agreed to replacing the stables with a generic high street mall so that should cut down the crowds when its built (to object to this you could go to http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/camdenmarket/ and sign the petition)
We had time to enjoy a pleasant lunch in the Brazilian restuarant in Inverness Street. The starters were particularly interesting and 2 courses for £12 was good value.
I arrived in time to catch the band playing before Little Fish. They and their fans had travelled up from the west country. They were called Kolo and were interesting particularly in their unusual changes of pace from a slow dirge to a mad thrash with nothing in between (and back again).
You will have noticed that I have seen Little Fish a lot lately but their set is still inspiring. Downstairs at the Barfly is a little short of lights but the daylight gives good picture opportunities. 4pm on a Sunday afternoon may not be the best time to attract a big crowd, but those who are here are enthusiastic. Judging by the number of CDs sold (and mostly signed by the band) it seems that there are quite a few new fans here.
