Vienna Ditto + Madam @ New Cross Inn
Vienna Ditto haven't played for around 18 months. There were a few attractive gigs tonight, but I was drawn to see how Vienna Ditto had changed. Having pretty much decided on this trip south of the river, my resolve was confirmed ehen Madam were added to the top of the bill.
I was last here in August, since then the New Cross Inn has been transformed. The bar has been moved to the back so that there is a good space in front of the stage (similar to changes at the Old Blue Last).
Vienna Ditto have become a duo and there are some rough edges as they seem to have a rather ambitious selection of guitar, keyboards and sever black boxes. Hatty has a fine voice, which I think could be a little higher in the mix. There's something rather quirky about the duo, I think it's a sort of earnest awkwardness which reminds me of characters from a David Lynch show (charming but slightly weird). I look forward to seeing how they progress, hopefully the teething problems will be ironed out, but the quirkiness will remain.
Madam are a bit too quiet tonight for the venue. People who weren't there for the music became increasingly noisy and rather spoiled Madam's show. I wouldn't recommend this venue to 'quieter' bands.
